The field guide

Check enclosure, facilities and restrictions

Turn a dog-space listing into a practical set of questions for the operator.

Ask about the whole boundary

Request the enclosure’s fence height, material and gate arrangement. Ask whether the same specification applies around the entire booked area and whether there are internal divisions or parts outside the enclosure. A single close-up photograph cannot show the complete boundary or establish whether it suits your particular dog.

Describe relevant behaviour, such as trying to squeeze through gaps or climbing, and ask the operator what information it can provide. Avoid treating “fully fenced” as a guarantee that every dog will remain contained. If the information is insufficient for your decision, choose another option or arrange a viewing before a session.

Look beyond the field

Check how you move from parking to the booked space, whether that route crosses shared areas and how gates are operated. Ask whether entry arrangements accommodate your vehicle, mobility needs and any other people attending. Find out whether staff are on site or whether you need a code or other arrival instructions.

Confirm drinking-water arrangements, shade, seating and toilets separately. A pond or dam shown in photographs is not the same thing as a supplied drinking-water point. Ask whether water features are within the booked enclosure and whether access to them can be avoided if that is your preference.

Read the restrictions that affect your visit

Check the venue’s conditions for dog numbers, children, equipment, vaccinations and any eligibility restrictions. Ask about the policy for an unwell dog and changing a booking if your circumstances change. Use the operator’s current rules rather than assuming a previous venue’s requirements apply everywhere.

If your dog has a legal restriction or a specific health-related concern, seek advice from the relevant authority or your veterinarian about your circumstances. A directory entry or the ability to purchase a booking does not determine legal eligibility or provide medical advice.

Houndstead publishes adult-only attendance and other suitability conditions. What Dogs Want has separate spaces with different features. These are examples of rules and layouts to verify for the exact booking, not universal conditions across private parks.

Check conditions close to departure

Ask how the operator communicates closures, maintenance or changes after heavy rain or other disruptive conditions. Confirm whether the surface, access road or parking changes materially in poor weather. Review the cancellation and rescheduling terms so you know what happens if the venue closes or you decide not to attend.

Before leaving home, check the latest confirmation and any operator update. Bring the items the venue asks visitors to provide, including your own water if it is not supplied. Treat the first visit as a chance to assess the actual layout, not as confirmation that every feature will match an older photograph.
